During my pre-teen years, my mother was a superhero. She was a dental hygienist fighting plaque on teeth by day, and an independent consultant for The Body Shop At Home helping other women to feel beautiful by night. Oh, and she held the job title of “mom” to 2 children making sure the family unit was functioning well 24/7.
I like to think I got my “busy bee” mind and work ethic from both my mom and dad. (As my father has always been and still is one of those workers that will arrive an hour before “clock-in” time.) Even as a pre-teen, I had a drive to work harder and do better than the day before. For instance, when I was not doing school work or training in ballet class I was learning new craft skills and discovering new opportunities to grow. (I was like a sponge…soaking up all that I could possibly learn.)
One of the most influential lessons I learned was from one of my dance teachers. In which, I was taught that my body was my “instrument.” Therefore, to perform well one must take care of it. (To stay healthy, one must take care of his/her body.) Needless to say…I had an increased awareness for the importance and value of self-care, and still do.
This value for self-care is what intrigued my curiosity in The Body Shop At Home business, while my mom was an independent consultant. I remember feeling like the luckiest dancer to have been able to do weekly peppermint foot soaks. I also felt lucky being able to spend quality time with my mom while helping her organize the products in the front room office, and of course helping her at parties where there was a always a group of women laughing and bonding over life’s simple pleasures. Smelling all of the fresh-scented body wash and body butter lotions was something I enjoyed as well. And, with much embarrassment, the Tea Tree Oil scent is one I will never forget as its facial products were on the frontline of my first pimple outbreak.
Flashing forward to today. My 25 year old self, continues to seek out opportunities for personal growth and strive to do better, be better. After completing my Master’s degree this past December, I made a goal for myself to put self-care in my immediate field of vision, re-discover the balance of physical and mental health, and re-define the feeling of personal well-being. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and that when one door closes another opens…With The Body Shop At Home launching once again in the United States, I felt an old door of my past re-opening. This time a little older, a little different, and with a big new exciting journey.
Love ya, doll!
